Getting the rate right

Fuel tax credit rates change regularly. They moved from 1 April 2026 when fuel excise was temporarily reduced and the heavy-vehicle road user charge was set to zero, and they are indexed again over time. This calculator never hardcodes a rate for exactly that reason: copy the current figure for your fuel type and activity from the ATO fuel tax credit rates table and the arithmetic here stays correct whatever the rate of the day is.

As a rule of thumb, diesel burnt in a heavy vehicle on public roads claims at a lower rate than fuel used off public roads: idling, running a PTO or working on site usually qualifies for the higher "all other business uses" rate, which is why the calculator splits the two. Eligibility, the $10,000-per-year PAYG instalment threshold and the records you need to keep are the ATO's call, not ours. This page does arithmetic, not tax advice.
