About these numbers
These come from OpenStreetMap, and a site only appears if somebody tagged it as heavy-vehicle specific — hgv=yes on a car park, highway=weigh_station, and so on. A truck bay that exists but carries no such tag is invisible here.
That is why New Zealand's figure is so much smaller than Australia's, and it is not because New Zealand has almost no truck parking. The tagging convention is simply far less used there. We would rather show the small true number of sites we can actually point you to than pad it with car parks we cannot vouch for.
"Spaces counted" only adds up the sites that state a capacity, so it is a floor. The sites that stay silent are not estimated — a guessed bay count is the kind of number a driver plans a night around and then finds full.
